Also known as Mental health stigma, Self-stigma
Negative attitudes, stereotypes and discrimination directed at people with a condition. In mental health it is the shame and fear that stop many people from seeking help.
In Psychology
Stigma is the set of negative beliefs and behaviours that mark people with a condition as weak, different or dangerous. In mental health it is one of the biggest barriers to care: people hide symptoms, delay treatment or stop it early rather than be labelled.
In Pakistan log kya kahenge — what will people say — often decides whether a family seeks help. Stigma reaches the family and even the medicines: depression ki goliyan are feared in a way diabetes tablets are not.
What reduces stigma most is contact — hearing real people talk about illness and recovery — together with plain, respectful language: "a person with schizophrenia", "died by suicide". Mental illness is a health condition, and treating it is as legitimate as treating diabetes.
